DRAGON QUEST I & II HD-2D Remake

DRAGON QUEST I & II HD-2D Remake is a Square Enix package containing HD-2D remakes of the first two adventures in the Erdrick trilogy. Players choose either DRAGON QUEST I or II from the start screen. In DRAGON QUEST I, Erdrick's descendant travels Alefgard, a land shaped by the goddess Rubiss, to defeat Dragonlord and his monsters. DRAGON QUEST II takes place years later, when three kingdoms founded by Erdrick's scions face a monster invasion. Its differentiator is the release of both titles, with the second game adding the new Princess of Cannock to Erdrick's descendant party.

Two Erdrick Adventures in One Package

The package includes both DRAGON QUEST I and II, selectable from the start screen. DRAGON QUEST I follows Erdrick's descendant as he seeks to slay the Dragonlord, who has unleashed hordes of monsters on Alefgard after the Lord of the Underworld was defeated. DRAGON QUEST II is set many years after Alefgard was saved. Three kingdoms founded by Erdrick's descendants and scions thrived in peacetime until an invasion of malicious monsters plunged the world into shadow. A band of young princes and princesses of Erdrick's lineage ventures forth to honor their ancestor's legacy. Both titles retain their original story premises within the HD-2D remake.

Alefgard, Rubiss, and the Dragonlord

In DRAGON QUEST I, the setting is Alefgard, a realm given shape by the goddess Rubiss. The hero travels this land hoping to slay the Dragonlord, meeting characters and facing foes along the way. DRAGON QUEST II expands the map with locales visited by the hero of legend as well as new towns, castles, caves, and dungeons. As the story progresses, players obtain a ship that allows traversal of seas and rivers, broadening the journey. These locations and the ship are concrete parts of the remake's world, tying both games to Erdrick's legacy.

Turn-Based Battles and Erdrick's Descendant Party

Combat uses the traditional turn-based system. Players attack with an assembly of weapons and use spells and abilities to slay menacing monsters. In DRAGON QUEST II, the Prince of Midenhall is the protagonist. He is joined by his cousins the Prince of Cannock, the Princess of Moonbrooke, and, new to this version, the Princess of Cannock. These four descendants of Erdrick band together to protect the world from evil forces. The party structure and turn-based battles form the core gameplay loop across both titles.
