The Long Dark

Set in the frozen expanse of post-disaster Northern Canada, The Long Dark by Hinterland Studio Inc. is a solo exploration-survival game that challenges players to endure harsh wilderness conditions. Defined by its innovative Survival Mode and episodic story campaign Wintermute, the game offers a mix of open-ended survival gameplay and narrative-driven exploration. With over 50 square kilometers of terrain and no supernatural threats, survival depends purely on managing resources, battling the cold, and navigating an unforgiving environment.

Survival Mode and Permadeath

Survival Mode is the cornerstone of The Long Dark, offering a sandbox experience with permadeath—once you die, your save is gone. You’ll balance Hunger, Thirst, Fatigue, and Cold while scavenging for over 100 gear items, including tools, weapons, and clothing. With 12 interconnected regions like Pleasant Valley and Milton, players face challenges such as hostile wildlife, hypothermia, and frostbite. Customizable difficulty settings and objective-based Challenges like "Whiteout" and "Hunted" extend replayability.

Episodic Storytelling in Wintermute

Wintermute delivers a campaign spanning four completed episodes (with a fifth in development). The story follows bush pilot Will Mackenzie and Dr. Astrid Greenwood as they struggle to reunite after a plane crash, uncovering the mysteries of a geomagnetic disaster. Locations like Perseverance Mills and encounters with characters such as a mysterious trapper and a gang of convicts drive the narrative. Unlike Survival Mode, Wintermute allows progress saves, offering around 30 hours of gameplay so far.

Dynamic World and Wildlife

The game’s wilderness features a richly detailed ecosystem with animals like wolves, bears, and moose serving as both threats and resources. Players can hunt, fish, and trap while contending with unpredictable weather and diminishing supplies. The dynamic environment ensures that no two survival attempts feel the same, challenging players to adapt constantly.
