GTA 6: What Returning GTA Fans Should Know Before Playing

If you spent hundreds of hours in Los Santos, Grand Theft Auto VI may look familiar at first glance and feel different once you start playing. Rockstar’s new game launches on November 19, 2026, and what it has shared so far points to a bigger, denser map, two leads who are written as a pair, and more systems around crime, weather, and wildlife. This guide covers what has been confirmed as of late October 2026, separating Rockstar’s own announcements from details reported by the press, and explains where returning PC players stand. Details can change, so check Rockstar’s official pages before you buy.

GTA 6

A bigger Leonida than the Los Santos you remember

GTA 6 is set in the fictional state of Leonida, Rockstar’s version of Florida, with a rebuilt and expanded Vice City as its best-known city. Rockstar has named six main regions: Vice City, the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, and Mount Kalaga National Park. In a Game Informer cover story, Rockstar’s Aaron Garbut called Leonida the biggest map the studio has made and said it’s about twice the size of GTA V’s, with more detail, density, interaction, and interiors. Rockstar hasn’t published an exact map size or a full official map, so treat “twice as big” as the studio’s own description, not a measurement.

The regions also give you different kinds of places to play. Rockstar’s own description of Mount Kalaga National Park, for example, mentions hunting, fishing, and off-road trails, which is a long way from GTA V’s city streets and desert.

GTA 6

Two protagonists instead of three

GTA V had three playable leads. GTA 6 has two, Jason and Lucia, and Rockstar presents them as a partnership. How much you engage with their relationship is up to you. Rockstar’s Rob Nelson told IGN they will remain partners in crime however you play, and Game Informer’s coverage says there are no gameplay bonuses for either a romantic or a platonic path, though the relationship affects parts of the story. Rockstar also says choices, big and small, can change the direction of the story.

If you’re expecting to hop between the two whenever you like, as you could in GTA V, that’s not how it will work. Rockstar has said switching is governed by story progression, not available on demand, because constant swapping would feel unnatural for the narrative. Expect switches to happen at moments the game decides make sense, such as during a getaway.

Crime, police, and a new heat system

Six-star wanted levels return, but they now sit alongside a new Heat system. According to Game Informer, police gather information from reported incidents based on your appearance and where you were at the scene of a crime, which suggests that how you look and where you’re seen will matter more than they used to. Robberies can be done solo or as a duo, and pulling them off together strengthens Jason and Lucia’s bond.

Car theft also looks more involved. Reporting on the story says some vehicles come with trackers or security systems, and an in-game phone app called WAiNK can scan a vehicle before you steal it to show its security, what it would cost to register as your own, and what a fence would pay for it.

Your phone does more

The phone also handles getting around. A ride-share app called RydeMe lets you fast travel, and the pause-menu map now has a satellite-style look. Snapmatic returns, but Rockstar has said that Jason and Lucia can browse posts and not upload their own, since they’re wanted criminals.

Weather and wildlife

Rockstar says it has rebuilt its weather system so it’s localized and persistent. It can be sunny where you are while a storm hits somewhere nearby, and rain can leave lasting puddles. Tropical storms and hurricanes are confirmed for Leonida. Rockstar hasn’t said how often they happen or how they affect missions and the story.

Leonida also has more than 170 animal species, including over 60 types of birds and more than 30 land mammals, plus fish and reptiles. Coverage of the story also mentions animal tracking and rare animal types, though Rockstar hasn’t detailed how those work.

Is there a GTA Online this time?

Not that Rockstar has announced. Its launch news describes GTA VI as a single-player experience, and as far as I could find, Rockstar hasn’t indicated that a new GTA Online will launch alongside it. If you’ve been playing GTA Online in GTA V, that game and its online mode are separate from GTA 6. The free month of GTA+ that comes with digital pre-orders is described as applying to GTA Online in its current form.

Platforms, editions, and launch timing

GTA 6 is coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The Standard Edition costs $79.99 and the Ultimate Edition costs $99.99, and the Ultimate Edition is sold digitally only. The physical version contains a download code, not a disc. Digital pre-orders can be pre-loaded from November 12, and the physical version also becomes available from November 12. Rockstar says purchases made before November 20, 2026 receive the Vintage Vice City Pack, so you don’t have to pre-order to get it.

GTA 6

What returning PC players should know

If you played GTA V on PC, this is the part to read carefully. As of late October 2026, Rockstar has not announced a PC version of GTA 6, and its platform list covers only PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. On October 13, GamesBeat reported, citing anonymous industry sources, that a PC release is planned for the first quarter of 2027, but Rockstar hasn’t confirmed it. There’s no PC edition to pre-order, and anyone selling a “GTA 6 Steam key” today is selling something that can’t be the real game on that platform.

When you do start looking at prices, Gamepriceradar can help. It’s a price comparison website, not a store, and it doesn’t sell games or keys. It lets you compare prices from different sellers so you can find the best deal, including Steam key prices for games that are on Steam. Its GTA 6 page currently covers the PlayStation 5 edition only, where you can check the GTA 6 price history it has recorded and set a price alert after logging in. If Rockstar announces a Steam release and keys appear, that’s when you’d compare GTA 6 Steam key price across sellers. Until then, there’s nothing Steam-related to compare, and official storefronts are the only place where Rockstar has confirmed what you receive.

Conclusion

For returning fans, the biggest shifts are a larger and more detailed map, two leads written as a pair, a heat system that changes how you think about escaping the police, and a lot more going on in the weather and wildlife. Console players have a launch date, two editions, and a pre-load window to plan around. PC players have a longer wait and one unconfirmed report to watch. Whichever group you’re in, keep an eye on the current GTA 6 price on Gamepriceradar alongside the storefront itself before you commit.
